First of all, please introduce yourself.

I work as a consultant in Japan, specializing in diversity, especially in the area of DEI&B, in my outreach activities. My colleagues so far include wheelchair users, people with chronic illnesses including vision and hearing, caregivers and childcare providers, and people with foreign citizenship. …… There are people with various situations and characteristics.

As we work together, we naturally began to think about how to create a better working environment and society for as many people as possible. I feel that diversity is not something for which there is an answer, but rather something that we need to think about together and practice a form that is in line with that community.

What is DEI&B?

What is DEI&B……?

Naho

DEI&B stands for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. It is made up of acronyms of each of these words.

You have heard of diversity, but DEI&B is still unfamiliar to you.

That’s no wonder, as it is a concept that has been advocated overseas and has only been introduced to Japan in the past two to three years.

There is no correct answer, and it is a concept that is currently growing.

My stance is that “Belonging” is especially important!

OK, it is actually very familiar. Let’s go over them one at a time, carefully, because they are a bit more formal. Why is belonging important? I think you will also understand why belonging is important.

Diversity

Naho

“Diversity” is a word that we hear often nowadays.

It is often translated as “diversity”.

If there is only one kind of everything, perspectives will become entrenched.

Society is not made up of just “me,” but people of different ages, genders, nationalities, and tastes.

The Internet has developed remarkably over the past 30 years, and with it, the limitations of time and space are no longer comparable to those of the past.

It is no longer possible to express the situation in terms of existing scales and measures.

Hmmm…. It is true that the commonplace is becoming less commonplace……..

Yes. That is right.

In this context, “everyone being diverse” ≈ flexibility in incorporating diversity would be a fitting concept.

It is important to note that just because diversity is achieved, it does not necessarily mean that there is a state of confusion or that everything is a jumble.

We can think of diversity as constituting the foundation of the mutual awareness that is required for mutual recognition and respect.

That’s right…it is the foundation of taking care of yourself and others.

Equity

Then, is it good that there are many things, each of which “just exists”?

It is good to be able to exist without being conscious of it.

However, it is important to note that our brains and minds unconsciously categorize and exclude those who are different from us.

This can be even more troublesome if you belong to the majority.

It can lead to behavior that unfairly excludes the minority, creating bullying and pressure.

Perhaps the majority may even become unstable if there is no synchronization.

It is important to acknowledge the existence of those who are different from us.

Yes. In a situation where diverse entities coexist, what is necessary is that all people, regardless of their circumstances, have equal opportunities and rights, and are able to challenge without fear of infringement.
This is “fairness.

Inclusion

Naho

In a situation where diverse entities coexist, another important aspect is inclusion.

Are all members who share the same goals informed? Are people restricted from participating or not depending on their position?

DisabilityLog

Come to think of it, it might be hard to get everyone to participate.

Naho

As talked about in the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), “leave no one behind” can be thought of as the very phrase referring to Inclusion.

It is easy to state this, but it takes a lot of ingenuity to put it into practice.

Belonging

Naho

And let’s remember the “B”. It was “Belongingness.”

Traditional diversity has been moving in new directions, gradually making up for missing ideas such as D&I and DE&I.

And now we have finally reached the point where we are aware of DEI&B.

Fairness is assured, no one is left out, and diversity is achieved. ……

Of course this is all lovely, but am I the only one who feels that diversity without the inclusion of belonging is a dream somewhere far away?

I think it is very important that no one is left behind. I think that each of us should ask ourselves whether we are making unconscious assumptions and prejudices, using “unconscious bias” as a starting point. I don’t think this is a pipe dream. If everyone consciously faces diverse people and practices respect, “true diversity” can be realized.

While some may feel that words such as belonging and affiliation are seemingly the opposite of diversity, it may mean that we need to broaden our perspective a bit.

Here is what happens if we incorporate, for example, community and “belonging,” which underpins a certain personality.

Belonging is simply a word that indicates “belonging,” which means that we construct our own identity while relating to our surroundings through a kind of attribute that indicates who we are. The effect of belonging is to ensure psychological safety, which leads to more confident and personable behavior.

You hear a lot these days about “psychological safety!” Just being part of a team that is easy to talk to gives you a sense of security. DisabilityLog is a group of blog members with such warm and kind hearts, which makes me feel very comfortable.

There is a field of study called attachment theory. According to this theory, the behaviors that humans take in order to develop socially and mentally as they grow up are called attachment behaviors.

Among these behaviors, there is the idea that the target of attachment is recognized as a safe base, and the self, including feelings, thoughts, and expectations, are formed through repeated activities of exploration of the surroundings and returning to the target.

I see! Indeed, the dilution of community is a social problem. Forming connections that allow for attachment and thinking about how to create a sense of belonging are also essential to promoting diversity.

Increased engagement directly leads to better team performance! I think it is most important to foster an organizational culture where people recognize each other and make the most of their talents.

If we assume that everyone has attachments based on the experiences they hold, we can imagine that belonging can be a catalyst for understanding others. Thus, when we are aware of the environment in which we are belonging, a sense of solidarity is created and communication is activated. Even when we are faced with events that we cannot handle alone, we can recover based on respect and esteem for one another, which is fascinating.

I’ve found that “belonging” is a necessary component of a person being who they are!

Yes, that’s why the “&B” in DEI&B is so important.

Let’s keep diversity close to home!

Finally, we’ve had the blog up and running for almost a month now!

The “I” sign with the pinky up, the “L” sign with the thumb and index finger up, the “Y” sign with the thumb and pinky up, and the “Y” sign with the pinky down.

Even if you cannot communicate with each other in words, you can express yourself in a wonderful way with one hand sign.

DisabilityLog aims to be a blog that is loved by people around the world, not only those with physical disabilities (wheelchairs) but also those with hearing and visual impairments, and we hope that we can interact and support each other regardless of disabilities (barriers).

Yes, I live in Guanajuato, it is a very nice place where many foreigners usually come to an event called Cervantino, or to celebrate the “día del muertos”. Yes! Spanish is the most widely spoken language. Spanish is the predominant language. My name is Riii, and I am in charge of planning and web marketing for DisabilityLog! I am an able-bodied person, but when my grandfather had a stroke, the left half of his body became paralyzed and he lived in a wheelchair. This led me to become interested in disability and barrier-free environments.

Before Corona became popular, I liked traveling, Disney, cameras, and board games. Whenever I traveled or went to Disney, I always took my SLR camera with me to take pictures and play board games with friends. I have my own board games and have even created a board game club at my company. Now it’s hard for me to get together with people much, so I’m into cooking, playing poi, and staycations!

I have the same hobby as you – Riii has a good camera, so she’s good at taking good Instagram pictures! Last year we all went to Disney and it was a lot of fun! I hope we can make lots of good memories together again. Lately, I’ve been working hard on my poiky activities every day (lol) Thanks for teaching me so much!

I was so happy that she sent me pictures and videos of Minnie in her yukata at New Year’s Disney ❤ I want to write another article about Disney-related issues for people with disabilities later. Riii-san, you have changed jobs twice! And with no experience! Can you tell us about your career path?

Riii

After graduating from college, I joined a real estate company as a new graduate in a clerical (general) position. However, the company had a high turnover rate, so I was given non-clerical work to fill in for people who had quit. When I thought about changing jobs, I decided that I wanted to choose my own work and environment, and in order to achieve this, I thought it would be better to have a job in hand, so I changed jobs to become an engineer at an SES company with no experience. I worked hard for three years, but because it was a subcontracting company, I was only doing testing and simple modifications, so I could not acquire any skills at all. I wanted to be involved in the upstream process, so I changed jobs to a company where I could work on planning, which is the most upstream process.

*SES…(System Engineering Services) is a type of outsourcing contract and refers to technical support services that dispatch engineers for specific tasks such as software and system development, maintenance and operation.

It was a tough time for you. I felt that it was the result of just thinking it through and adjusting your trajectory. Do you have any tips for changing jobs with no experience?

The trick is to think carefully about why you are quitting and what you want to achieve at your next job, and to be able to talk about why you are changing jobs and why you want to do it during the interview based on what you have thought about. I think it is also important to think about whether there is any connection between the job you want to do and your current job or past experience, and how you will make use of your past experience at your new company.

It’s great that Riii has a solid career vision for herself! She is a senior in life. I am glad that your job search was successful. I’m sure it’s going to be tough now that you’re going to start working in earnest, but let’s do our best for each other!

I’m “Usa” the wheelchair x beautiful woman from DisabilityLog! I was born with multiple medical conditions and use a wheelchair when I go out. I like to teach others what I am good at, and I was good at math and art in elementary and middle school. I could solve problems faster than any other girl in math. The PC skills I learned in high school have helped me expand my work.

If you had to promote yourself in one word, what would you say?

If I were to promote myself in one word, I would say “wheelchair x beautiful woman” + “make you laugh x model” (laughs). Many women want to be beautiful, even if they have a disability!

I know, right? Seeing cute people makes me want to be cute myself, and I have benefited from being cute in many situations. I received sweets as a thank-you for my work, and I received soup in secret from other people.

Usa

I named it that because my character has always liked to act in an interesting way, like in a drama. When I was a student, I used to watch a lot of dramas, so I guess that had an influence on me. Being different and interesting attracts a lot of attention, doesn’t it? When I was a student, I was made to play the role of a “romantic” protagonist, like in a movie (laughs). I was thinking…they were saying it had to be me. On the one hand I was embarrassed, but on the other hand I was too happy.

That’s a true story! I have something similar lol…when you have a disability, even the smallest unintentional thing stands out in many ways and it becomes your shining personality!

I’m curious. By the way, do you have any hobbies or interests that you are into now?

My hobbies and interests include sightseeing and traveling in the Tokyo area, going to trendy cafes, eating delicious sweets, and listening to music. I also love Disney shopping! Recently, the new coronavirus outbreak has caused me so much unbelievable pain that I don’t know how long I will live. Before I leave life unfinished, I am trying new things, such as coloring my hair for the first time in my life and going to a nail salon.

My name is Koro, and I am in charge of the overall design and system of DisabilityLog! I was born with a bone disorder and use a wheelchair when I go out. In elementary and junior high school, I was an all-five in art, and everyone looked up to me in class. My specialties are PC and design, and I have many experiences in high school and university that I am now putting to good use.

Before the Corona craze, I used to travel and spend elegant and healing time in stylish and delicious restaurants and cafes to fill my stomach and mind. Especially, afternoon tea with its atmosphere & cozy atmosphere was exceptional and a moment of happiness . Recently, I have been selfless in drawing illustrations with Procreate and listening to books on Audible. In fact, I created all the logos, headers, background images, etc. for DisabilityLog. It’s very meaningful and fun to have a creative home time where I can make something into a form.

After all, you have too good a sense of design…I am also curious about the personality part. What kind of person do people around you usually describe you as?

To my delight, my friends often tell me that I have a strong heart that will not be defeated in any environment, that I am quick-witted, friendly, cute, kind, bright, and intelligent, and that I have a really nice smile that gives courage to everyone around me. I was named the wheelchair goddess because I always smile and sparkle (lol), and people who meet me for the first time say I am cheerful, positive and seem to be a good influence.

I am too concerned about my surroundings and cannot honestly express my feelings to others, and I tend to overreach and hold back too much in an attempt to meet the expectations of those around me. Nevertheless, regardless of my physical handicap, I challenge various things and will continue to challenge what I am interested in without putting as many restrictions on my behavior as possible and without transparency.

Yes!!! I have great respect for people who are able to help others without getting caught up in immediate profit. I myself feel a sense of fulfillment and purpose in life when I make an effort to do something for someone else. I am most happy when I am able to contribute to the benefit of others, and it makes me want to tell someone about it. I want to continue to be the one and only person who can move the hearts of many people like that! ~ Always with a positive mindset ~ I want to be with you all the time smiling.
